MLK Emergency Funding Program

 

The MLK Emergency Fund exists to assist students in meeting unusual and/or extenuating circumstances that may impact their academic success. Emergency funds must be used for emergency situations only.  An emergency is defined as a condition that poses a hardship for a student and is likely to affect their academic progress. To receive this you must:

  • Must be currently enrolled at Iowa State University
  • Must be an undergraduate U.S. domestic student who identifies as African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian American, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, and/or Multiracial 
  • Must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA, not be on academic and/or disciplinary probation, and not have a financial/registration hold on university records
  • Must have a current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file
  •  

MLK Emergency funding can be used for payment towards:

  • Childcare
  • Family medical emergencies
  • Rent (one month’s rent allowed per academic year)
  • Utilities
  • Other issues deemed urgent and/or essential to academic progress

MLK Emergency funding cannot be used for any payments towards:

  • Academic fees or U-bills
  • Bail bonds or legal judgments
  • Car payments
  • Credit card bills
  • Dish, Cable TV service
  • Elective surgeries
  • Non-emergency home/family visits
  • Traffic violations and parking tickets
  • Other issues that are not essential to the student’s academic progress
