Meet Jamie

Sophomore, Software Engineering

Academic Program for Excellence (APEX) Scholar

Where are you from?

Springfield, Missouri

What are your career aspirations?

I want to travel the world working for a technology giant like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Intel, etc.

What advice do you have for future ISU multicultural students considering Iowa State?

One of the reasons I chose to come to Iowa State was because I had witnessed the community that was built around their multicultural students along with the support they offer in other areas. My advice to those considering Iowa State would be to visit the campus and talk to students and staff about their experiences. ISU welcomes all.

Why did you apply to participate in the APEX program?

I applied for APEX because I wanted to figure how to navigate both the educational and social side of college before fall begins. It also appeared to be a great program to work on my leadership skills and has been a great opportunity to network and build a community with others. In addition to this, I am in love with the campus and wanted to experience summer at ISU before the seasons change. APEX has also allowed me to accumulate a GPA by beginning a semester earlier than other freshmen.

What does it mean to you to be an APEX Scholar?  What advice do you have for new APEX Scholars?

Being an APEX Scholar means having the opportunity to build a community of friends and to practice my skills as both a student and a leader. The community we form has brought me closer to whom I want to be in the future and has taught me lessons that I wouldn’t have found anywhere else. My advice for new APEX Scholars is to take advantage of each opportunity that comes your way and to step out of your comfort zone because you never know when or where you will find your passion.

What experiences have been most meaningful to you while a student?

One of the most meaningful experiences that I have had as a student has been connecting with my professors and varying program staff on the ISU campus outside of class. After talking with them and seeing how college classes worked, I realized that they were teaching for the student’s best interest and that they are more personal than how TV  and movies portray them to be.  I’ve also really enjoyed meeting many new people and making friends
